President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning following a tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two prominent government ministers.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The helicopter, which was en route from Accra to Obuasi, lost radar contact and was later discovered burned beyond recognition. Among those who perished were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice-Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and other top officials and military crew.

In response to the national tragedy, President Mahama has suspended all official presidential engagements for the rest of the week. He also directed that national flags be flown at half-mast to honour the memory of the deceased.

The President described the incident as a profound loss to the nation and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. The government is expected to provide further updates as investigations continue into the cause of the crash.
